Message from the General Manager
Welcome to our inaugural issue of Fairfield Glade Community Club's new e-magazine!
Fairfield Glade Living is intended to promote and support the unique lifestyle we have here at Fairfield Glade Community Club. Each issue will share a little bit about the community and the residents living here. Hopefully, it will be a widely used tool for everyone to gain a little more insight and knowledge about the activities, amenities, clubs and events that we enjoy here. And what will make it even that much more enjoyable is that we have enlisted the help of some of our more thoughtful and passionate neighbors within the community to help us tell the stories that are Fairfield Glade.
Initially, we are planning on a quarterly release of the magazine but are hoping to move to bi-monthly before the end of the year. We hope that you enjoy this first issue.

Winter Weather Safety
Even though we have mild winters in Fairfield Glade, don't be caught off guard. Now is the time to start digging out the heavy coats, gloves, scarves, and hats. Wipe the cobwebs off the snow shovel, bucket of ice melt or vehicle scrapper. If you do not have any of these yet, make sure you stock up before they predict a storm. Once a storm is predicted, everyone and their brother will be out looking to stock up. Also remember to get the type of ice melt that is safe for sidewalks and vegetation.
Now is also the time to make sure your vehicle is ready for Ol' Man Winter. This simple checklist will make sure your vehicle is safe to be operating in cold, snowy conditions:
- check your battery connections
- check coolant
- check your windshield wiper blades
- fill the windshield wiper fluid
- check the tread on your tires and the air pressure
- check your belts and hoses
- check your spark plug wires
- fix any visible leaks
And make sure you always have a full tank of gas before venturing out for long distances. This is important for 2 reasons: first, if you should run off the road, it will give you fuel to run your vehicle for warmth; and secondly, the added fuel will provide extra weight to your vehicle, allowing for better traction in slippery conditions.
And one last important tip, make sure you clear off any snow on the hood of your vehicle before driving. As you gain speed, the snow will blow up onto the windshield and can cause temporary blindness.
Being prepared for any and all situations makes the bumps in the road of life a little easier to handle.

Tennis is a Year Round Sport in Fairfield Glade!
This is the time of year that Fairfield Glade tennis players take the opportunity to come inside and continue enjoying the great exercise, fun and competition of tennis at the Tennis Center and its indoor four court complex. If players are looking for a group, they can call the Tennis Center and the staff is happy to find and fit them into an available slot. The Tennis Center also has a fully stocked pro-shop, locker rooms, lounge and racquet stringing area. The 4 hard courts within the Center are available by reservation, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM-7:30 PM and Saturday, 8 AM-4 PM.
For beginners and those that want to improve their game, the Tennis Center offers tennis lessons with a full time pro, William Taylor. William gives private and group lessons, does "drills with the pro" and promotes a stroke of the day lesson as well. Another opportunity for the beginner or those that just have not played for some time is the Never Ever Class. The first Never Ever of this year begins February 21st. Video lessons is another learning tool used and those are available beginning March 2nd.
In addition to lesson programs, mixers take place every Tuesday and Friday from 2 PM -4 PM. This is a great opportunity to "meet and greet" and possibly find that group you have been looking for! Mixers run year round and are great fun for any skill (or lack of) player.
The Tennis Center is also bringing back Demo Day! This is always a popular event and a great time to see, feel and experience the newest technology in tennis equipment. Make plans now to come out on Friday, February 10th, from 1PM -3 PM, for this exciting event! Other programs and events that will be starting soon are "Drills with Will", and Cardio Tennis so continue watching those e-mails, the website and reading the Bulletin for things still to come.
For additional information on the events mentioned in this article or about tennis in general, the staff encourages everyone to call the Tennis Center at 931-484-3758. They also encourage everyone to come on out and enjoy a great sport that is great fun and just another way and reason to stay active and healthy in Fairfield Glade!

Clubs in Fairfield Glade
What attracted you to Fairfield Glade? For my family, it was location, climate and, of course, golf! We enjoy living in a community that is close to our scattered family. We like that the Plateau's altitude allows for a cooler, less humid summer, and the golf courses cannot be beat.
One other benefit that we learned about after living here for a number of months was the multitude of available club activities covering a wide range of interests: food, dancing, sports, travel, quilting, hiking, bridge, pinochle, biking, singing, rug-hooking, the arts, wood-working, crafts, corvettes, motorcycles, coins, genealogy, writing, various support groups, embroidery and sewing, scrapbooking, prayer, skeet and trap-shooting, archery, plus the Elks, Kiwanis, and Rotary, to name just a few.
Many of the clubs in the Glade announce upcoming meetings and events in the Glade Sun and Vista. The new Fairfield Glade Living e-magazine provides to those clubs, on a quarterly basis, another opportunity to promote their activities to a wide audience. If your club is interested in being highlighted in an upcoming Fairfield Glade Living, contact Jill Barnes at jbarnes@fairfieldglade.cc to learn more. For more information on our local clubs, visit our Local Club page on our website here.

Bridge Club
WHETHER YOU'RE A PARTY BRIDGE OR DUPLICATE PLAYER, FAIRFIELD GLADE HAS SOMETHING FOR YOU!
One of the first things I noticed when I moved to Fairfield Glade was the number of people playing bridge. They're everywhere! In the Village Green Mall, in the back of the Fairfield Glade restaurants, even in the snack shops and meeting rooms at the golf courses. Bridge is definitely alive and well in Fairfield Glade.
Are you a party bridge player? Try the weekly Wednesday Party Bridge Group that plays at the Multi-Purpose Building. This is a friendly, laid back group of 5-6 tables that has been playing weekly for over ten years, and players of all levels are welcome. You don't need a partner to attend. Call Cliff Adams at 484-7947 for more information. Or try Shirley Butka's Wednesday group. They play at the Village Green Mall on Wednesday, generally in the back of Villa Pizza. All levels of players are welcome and you don't need a partner - just bring a smile. Shirley can be reached at 484-9611. Want to play with your spouse or regular partner? Try Flight Bridge. This is a party bridge group that plays one-on-one matches once a month from September through May. Players are flighted according to experience level and the matches are held in the homes of the players. There's a year end banquet with prizes awarded. Call Tom Williams at 248-6601 for more information.
If duplicate is your game, there are three sanctioned duplicate games in Fairfield Glade. Jack Paul's games have been running for over 15 years. Jack runs a newcomer's game, limited to non-life masters, on Tuesday nights at the Community Church. This is the largest duplicate game, averaging 17 tables. Jack's open game is held at the same venue on Thursday nights and averages 10 tables. Call Jack at 484-7221 to arrange a partner. Linda and Bob King run an open game on Wednesday mornings at the Village Green Mall that averages seven tables. Call Linda or Bob to arrange a partner at 456-6479. Jack also runs an open duplicate game in Crossville on Monday mornings at the Shepard of the Hills Lutheran Church. Once a year the Crossville unit hosts its Fall Foliage Bridge Fest tournament at the Crossville Community Complex. Now in its 25th year, the three day tournament is known for its hospitality and player-friendly atmosphere. The tournament hosts well over 200 tables of bridge players over the three days. There are events for players of every level, and they particularly welcome newer players. All of these activities are sanctioned by the American Contract Bridge League.
New to the game, or want to brush up on your skills? Both Linda King (456-6479) and Judi Vineyard (484-7874) offer bridge lessons in the Glade. Judi specializes in players who have never played bridge before, but also offers a variety of intermediate and advanced classes and workshops. Linda also teaches players of all levels through classes and workshops, and specializes in the 2/1 bidding system. Both are accredited American Contract Bridge League teachers, and both have extensive teaching experience including teaching on cruise ships and at land festivals all over the world.
Nothing catch your eye? Then just ask around! There are many informal party bridge and duplicate groups out there, always looking for new players. Remember, bridge is a great way to have fun and meet people!

The Bold and the Curious turn out for Fairfield's Restaurants New Menu Tasting
Corporate Executive Chef Jerry James, Sous Chef Raymond Webb, Stonehenge Bar & Grille Unit Chef Tim Causey and Glade café Manager Kathy Pischel were all on hand Tuesday Evening, January 21st for the Community Club's first new menu tasting that included all three restaurants and brought in a smorgasbord of food for everyone to critique and enjoy. The Plateau and Glade Rooms were meticulously set with the food as the center piece as kitchen staffs showed there flare for the dramatic with flaming sauté stations and live plate presentations as everyone watched with anticipation to dig in to the plethora of delicious samples. There wasn't anyone that left and didn't feel like they had just had dinner...and a show!
From Legends, Chef Jerry featured Prime Rib Flatbread, Shrimp & Grits, Traditional Tossed Salads, Broiled Salmon with Dill Cream Butter Sauce, Meatloaf Bruchetta with Mashed Potatoes and Pork Picatta with Pasta. With his latest menu offering which he introduced in early December, Chef Jerry took a new home-style approach with a twist on some of the more traditional "comfort food" ingredients. Legends is also offering two portion choices with some of the items for those that want to enjoy a "dining experience" but without the heavier calories. "This time we are really looking at portioning and plate presentation in an effort to keep our meals more attractive and affordable" said Chef.
Tim Causey and the staff at Stonehenge bar and grille introduced some new flare from their menu. Guests enjoyed a new favorite at Stonehenge, the Baja Fish Pita. Tim also treated everyone to Buffalo Chicken Sliders made with Stonehenge's signature Buffalo Wing Sauce, the Smokin' Club and English Style Battered Cod.
Not to be outdone, The Glade Café was in on the action as well featuring a beautiful display of decadent dessert pastries such as their Fruit Scones, Raspberry Cheesecake, Lemon-Berry Tart and Chocolate-Caramel Turtle Brownie. And although the café' also offered fresh brewed Starbuck's Coffee, you could also go all the way by adding one of their signature flavors like hazelnut, vanilla or caramel.
Bob Weber, General Manager, was also on hand and spoke with each attendee to make sure they each were getting the most out of the evening and also listening to comments and suggestions. However, there was one negative that seemed to carry through the entire room, "It's a shame that more people weren't here to enjoy this delicious food and meet the people behind it!"
For complete menu selections of all three restaurants, visit the dining section at www.fairfieldglade.cc.

Fairfield Glade Library a Success Story
The library here was started in 1973 just two years after the first house was built in the Glade. It consisted of one small room in the Civic Center with less than 1000 books, all donated, and a staff of 6 volunteers led by Marion Connell. Hours were half days, three days a week. In 1980 the library went uptown to a room in the Village Green Shopping Mall. Book donations continued to come in as well as books borrowed from the District Lending Library and in 1986 they had 1000 books checked out in a single month!
In 1992 the library moved to its present location in the Multi-Purpose Building with a total of 3000 books. Since it has expanded from one room to three rooms and averages over 1800 books checked out each month. Adding over 40 new books to its shelves on a monthly basis. This remarkable growth would be an accomplishment worthy of praise. However, what is truly remarkable is that, although the Community Club supplies the building, this has been accomplished with NO BUDGET! The library has existed from day one strictly on donations and a dedicated volunteer staff! Evelyn Parziale currently directs 22 volunteers to do all the necessary functions of growing and maintaining the library.
The library is open 6 days a week 9 AM to 1 PM on weekdays and 9 AM to Noon on Saturdays. The quantity and quality of the books is very good and the smile from the volunteers is standard service.
All FG residents and visitors are welcome and you're missing out if you haven't stepped in to check out a book or to browse the hard cover books on sale for $2.00 or the paperbacks on sale for $.25, (Try to beat that a book store.)
The library is constantly trying to improve the book selection available and depends on your help with donations. Buy that new Best Seller at a bookstore, read it and donate it to the library for your neighbors to enjoy. Cash donations for the purchase of new books is always welcome. Just say "thank you" to the volunteer you meet on your next visit. We have a treasure here in Fairfield Glade that we should all appreciate and help nurture.

Fairfield Glade Resident Services
Fairfield Glade Resident Services would like to congratulate "Fairfield Glade Living" on their inaugural issue, assured that it will provide a worthwhile and needed means of communication to our residents and property owners. We wish it well and thank them for the opportunity to contribute to this new effort.
Fairfield Glade Resident Services (FGRS), as many of you know, is a non-profit, charitable organization developed in 2008 following a Senior Needs Study which was conducted by the Long Range Planning Committee of the Fairfield Glade Community Club. It was founded by a group of concerned residents to address the human and social needs of our county-wide community.
FGRS is dedicated to the principle that "Together, We Can Enhance Our Quality of Life. To accomplish this, we have presented 21 Workshop/Forums/Seminars on a wide range of topics from health care, and Caring for the Caregiver, to educational topics such as Internet Security, Preventing Falls, Public Transportation, and Music for a Healthy, Happy You. Along with our Workshops, FGRS has been busy establishing 20 Neighborhood Watch Care Ring Groups which not only helps prevent crime but emphasizes the need to "Care" for your neighbor. The Vial of life has been distributed to over 2000 homes and individuals. Answering questions for the emergency personnel when you may not be able too can be a life saving help.
Ready to be launched is a new program we call "Welcome Home". New residents of Fairfield Glade will be visited, with their permission, to give helpful information about Fairfield Glade, Crossville, and surrounding areas. Many questions are unanswered when you move to a new location and we hope to speed up the process of becoming comfortable here at the Glade.
A new series of Workshops are under preparation for next year so stay tuned for that announcement. Visit us on the web for more information!
